When Stacie Tovar’s alarm goes off in the morning, she doesn’t get ready for work, not exactly. She gets ready to work out.
Exercising is the 29-year-old’s job.
She’s a CrossFitter. A really, really good one.
Tovar, of Omaha, competed in the CrossFit Games for the fifth time this summer in front of more than 25,000 people. Her performance caught the attention of several companies in the fitness industry that now sponsor her.
Their sponsorships – six in all – allowed Tovar to quit her full-time marketing job to pursue her passion.
“I dreamt about it,” she said. “I didn’t ever think it was going to happen.”
Her next project takes her to the Civic Auditorium for the second annual Snow Bowl on Saturday. The Snow Bowl is a fitness competition for athletes who have not competed in regional CrossFit tournaments.
More than 200 people are expected, including people from Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Kansas and South Dakota. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners. CrossFit Omaha, at 8938 L Street, organized the event.
“It give those people a chance to see what the competitive life is like,” said Tovar, who will help emcee the event.
She’ll also sign autographs and take pictures with fans. Tovar is well known locally and among CrossFitters across the country. Nearly 16,000 people follow her on Twitter and 5,000follow her on Facebook.
“It’s like a dream come true to me,” Tovar said from inside CrossFit Omaha, where she’s been training since 2008.
She’s there stretching before her 10 a.m. workout, dressed head to toe in Reebok gear. As a sponsored athlete, she touts the companies she represents – Reebok, Progenex, Spider Tech, Again Faster, PurePharma and Kill Cliff – on social media and tests their products.
“I basically beat it to crap and tell them yes or no,” she joked.
She’s also preparing for the 2014 CrossFit Games, though she needs to qualify first.
“Once I’m there, whatever happens, happens,” Tovar said. “But I love to win. I’m a competitor.”
On Saturday, she’ll be surrounded by people who feel the same way.
